Honmoku Pier

Honmoku Pier was built as a series of piers A, B, C, and D from the 1960s when Japan began expanding foreign trade, forming a comb-shaped pier. Since the arrival of the first full-container ship in Japan in 1968, the pier has played a central role at the Port of Yokohama handling a variety of cargo for not only full-container ships, but also conventional ships and roll-on/roll-off ships.
The BC Container Terminal was constructed by reclaiming land between Piers B and C to deal with the increasing size of container ships and amount of cargo. It has been in full operation since 2005. This terminal integrates and efficiently manages both the quay and terminal operations, while promoting the concentration of container cargo and operating as the main container terminal at Honmoku Pier.
Furthermore, Pier D is undergoing enhancements to bolster terminal functions to deal with aging of the facility and streamline container cargo handling. In 2014, D4 Terminal, and in 2019, D1 terminal were both renovated and reopened for use.
On the other hand, Pier A is being developed as a new logistics hub to expand and firmly establish the port’s container cargo handling capacity, and efforts are being made to further enhance its logistic functions.
Honmoku Pier will continue to be a key terminal handling a wide range of import and export cargo, and dealing with around 50 % of the port’s container volume.
