Reflecting the growing global awareness for the environment, the Japanese government declared its intention to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 46 % by 2030, compared to 2013 levels. An ambitious long-term goal has been set of achieving net zero emissions by 2050, and environmental initiatives are being promoted in a variety of fields.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism is promoting the development of carbon-neutral ports (CNP) to enhance port functions aimed at decarbonization, and prepare for the handling of hydrogen, ammonia, etc. This will bolster the competitiveness of our ports and industries, and contribute to the realization of a decarbonized society. Within this context, Yokohama City declared its intention to realize “Zero Carbon Yokohama” to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The Port of Yokohama also aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. It is striving to develop a carbon neutral port (CNP) to achieve net zero emissions through the large-scale importing, storage, and use of next-generation energy sources such as hydrogen and ammonia. Furthermore, efforts are being made to enhance port functions and attract industries to the surrounding area with a focus on decarbonization.
YPC will participate in this initiative and work together with the Port and Harbor Bureau, City of Yokohama to promote the formation of the CNP.
