Safety and Security

To realize safety and security against disasters and acts of terrorism, the Port of Yokohama has developed seismically reinforced quays and seismically isolated terminal facilities, and engages in safety drills. Below are the initiatives we implement:
Safety and Security

Seismically Isolating Container Cranes

Major earthquakes in Japan, such as the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995, and the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, damaged container cranes and other terminal facilities, disrupting their use. We are collaborating with Yokohama Kawasaki International Port Corporation to seismically isolate container cranes, to minimize damage and ensure rapid recovery in the event of a disaster.

Implementing of Security Measures and Participation in Drills

To prevent international terrorism and organized crime at the waterfront, we have bolstered security measures based on the revised SOLAS Convention (*), which includes the installation and proper management of fences, gates, surveillance cameras, and sensors. We also conduct regular drills in collaboration with national and Yokohama City authorities, as well as relevant businesses, to prepare for possible emergencies such as terrorist attacks.

*International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea , established after the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. It was revised after the September 11 attacks in 2001 to bolster maritime security.
