On August 19, 2026, the car carrier “TIRRANNA” (LOA 237 m, capacity: 7,620 vehicles), operated by Wallenius Wilhelmsen (WW, Norway) and installed with a wind-assisted propulsion system (wind sail), called at Daikoku Pier in the Port of Yokohama.

　The wind sail installed on the vessel automatically detects wind direction using sensors and automatically adjusts the sail’s angle to achieve optimal propulsion. It is expected to reduce fuel consumption and lower the environmental impact of car carrier operations.

　According to WW, this marks the first time a wind sail has been installed on one of the company’s vessels currently engaged in commercial operations. The company plans to verify the wind sail’s performance through commercial operations and consider expanding its implementation to other vessels.

　On the day of the port call, our president, Mr. Uematsu, along with other representatives from the Port of Yokohama, visited the vessel to observe the deployment of the wind sail and other operations, and exchanged views with WW representatives, including Mr. Jon Tarjei Kråkenes, Vice President, Sales Japan, and Captain.
